Older than Twitter. Not quite as profitable. A pro wrestling counterfactual: What if the World Wrestling Federation was organized around workrate, around the idea that the pivotal word in the phrase "sports entertainment" is the first? Can one Ricky Steamboat pinfall put right what once went wrong? Go to the earliest archived post; scroll to December 19, 2005 "it begins" and you're ready to roll.

Triple H, October 2011:
“When I grew up, I hated Hogan. I thought he was terrible and didn’t like to watch him. I was like Punk in a way. I liked the Steamboats and Flairs and the ones that could go. Would I be right in saying that Hogan was the wrong guy to go with, and they should’ve changed directions and gone with Steamboat because he was the better wrestler? Ludicrous.” - Triple H. 2012 Version: The 100 Greatest Wrestlers in Counterfactual History

WWF Title=10 pts
IC title, all other primary titles(NWA, ECW, ROH, NJPW, AJPW, NOAH, DGate)=7 points
WWF Tags, all other secondary titles=5 points
all other tags=3 points.
Holding any of those belts for a year is worth the value of another title run. Yes, there are promotions like the AWA and the entire country of Mexico that aren't represented here. That reflects my taste, yes. There are all sorts of methodological issues one might raise, and my subjective evaluation is the merits of the wrestlers isn't accurately reflected by the list. Yes.
But I don't care. I love list. Point totals and top title earned in parentheses.
Active wrestlers who are close to the list:
Nick Nemeth (15)
Randy Orton (17)
Jeff Hardy (16)
Charlie Haas (16)
Truth Killings (13)
Bobby Roode (15)
Chris Sabin (20)
James Storm (15)
Roderick Strong (13)
Bryan Danielson (19)
Tyler Black (13)
Davey Richards (13)
Kohei Suwama (14)

95. Jay Briscoe (21)
94. Mark Briscoe (21)
93. Christian (21)
92. Hulk Hogan (23)
91. Minoru Suzuki (23)
4 active wrestlers in the bottom 10; obviously additional Briscoe tag runs in ROH seem like a good bet, Suzuki has a possibility at more titles, Christian's wrestling for the IC title at Summer Slam 2011.

89. Naomichi Marufuji (23)
88. Buddy Rogers (24)

84. Rick Steiner (25)
83. Minoru Tanaka (25)
82. Koji Kanemoto (25)
81. Taz (26)
Five active wrestlers in that ten; Aries just defeated Angle in a TNA program and certainly looks prime for a title shot, Marufuji and Nakamura are near certain future belt holders, Tanaka and Kanemoto are possible belt holders. And don't be surprised if Book gets another shot at a title in 2012.
80. Tajiri (26)
79. Christopher Daniels (26)
78. Road Warrior Animal (27)
77. Curt Hennig (27)

73. Strangler Lewis (28)
72. Gene Kiniski (28)
71. Lance Storm (28)
Daniels isn't in a title hunt in TNA now, but should always be considered a threat; Sugiura will probably get more belts.

54. Arn Anderson (33)
53. Yoshiro Takayama (33)
52. Yuji Nagata (33)
51. Takeshi Morishima (33)
Kanemaru, DVon, and Morishima have belts now; Kea, Benjamin, Yuji could still win belts.

45. Terry Funk (36)
44. Steve Austin (37)
43. Sting (37)
42. Steve Williams (38)
41. Sabu (38)
Probably no more points to be earned in this block.
40. Bubba Ray Dudley (40)
39. Hiroyoshi Tenzan (edit43)
38. Stanislaus Zbyszko (42)
37. Jun Akiyama (43)

35. Owen Hart (47)
34. Rob Van Dam (47)
33. Shinya Hashimoto (48)
32. CM Punk (48)
31. Frank Gotch (49)
Bubba and Akiyama currently have belts; Van Dam may get more belts, Punk's a near certainty to win more.
30. Satoshi Kojima (edit 52)
29. Samoa Joe (edit 52)
28. AJ Styles (49)
27. Randy Savage (51)
26. Hiroshi Tanahashi (51)
25. Cactus Jack (52)
24. Genichiro Tenryu (53)
23. Chris Jericho (53)
22. Harley Race (56)
21. Jumbo Tsuruta (56)
AJ and Tanahashi currently have belts; Jericho may get another, Joe is likely to get another.
20. Tatsumi Fujinami (57)
19. Stan Hansen (57)
18. Eddy Guerrero (58)
17. Rey Mysterio (59)
16. Kenta Kobashi (66)
15. Kurt Angle (66)
14. Toshiaki Kawada (69)
13. Bob Backlund (70)
12. Ricky Steamboat (73)
11. Kensuke Sasaki (73)
Rey and Angle are the biggest threats for more belts; Rey's wrestling for the WWF Title at Summer Slam 2011.
Finally, the top 10.
10. Shawn Michaels (75)
9. Jushin Thunder Liger (84)
8. Chris Benoit (85)
7. Bret Hart (89)
6. Vader (93)
5. Great Muta (94)
4. Mitsuharu Misawa (108)
3. Lou Thesz (111)
2. Ric Flair (115)
1. Bruno Sammartino (120)
Muta and Liger could still pick up points, but unless Flair can somehow sweep his way into another belt, Bruno looks safe for awhile.
